Bible

The Christian scriptures, regarded by Christians as a source of God’s revelation and guidance.

The collection of sacred books recognised by Christians as Scripture, divided into the Old Testament and the New Testament.

The Bible is Christianity's sacred collection of books. Catholics receive it as the revealed Word of God: through its writings, they believe God makes himself and his relationship with humanity known. This does not mean that every biblical book has the same style or purpose.

The collection of sacred writings Christians regard as a source of revelation, teaching and authority.

Distinguish the canon, which concerns which books belong in the Bible, from interpretation, which concerns what those books mean.

For the Council of Trent, link 8 April 1546 to its confirmation of the Catholic canon. It did not write the Bible or create its books.

Use 2 Timothy 3:16 to explain both divine inspiration and the Bible’s practical authority; do not simply quote it.

The Christian scriptures, used as a source of beliefs and moral guidance.

Christians regard the Bible as more than a collection of human opinions. Calling it the Word of God expresses the belief that God communicates through it: it reveals his nature and gives guidance about belief and behaviour. This gives the Bible authority—a recognised right to guide Christian life.
