In Advaita, a non-dual understanding associated with Shankara and represented in the Smarta tradition, the true self and Brahman are ultimately one. Their apparent separation results from ignorance. Liberation therefore involves realising an identity that is already true, rather than creating a new relationship between two separate beings.
