Soft iron core

Definition

The iron placed inside an electromagnet that becomes magnetised while current flows and readily loses its magnetism when the current is switched off.

Insert a soft iron core. The solenoid's field magnetises the iron, whose magnetic field adds to that of the coil. This produces a strong electromagnet.
