Specification 15.5 · Paper 2
A relationship represented by a straight line on a graph; equal changes in one variable produce equal changes in the other.
Specification P2.3d, P2.3e · Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher)
A relationship whose graph is a straight line, so its gradient is constant.
Revise: Linear and non-linear relationshipsA non-linear relationship tells you that force and extension are not proportional, but the loading graph alone does not prove that the object has been permanently deformed. To test elasticity, the load must also be removed and the object's length checked.
Paper 1, Paper 2
A relationship represented by a straight line on a graph; for a component whose I–V line passes through the origin, current is directly proportional to potential difference.
Use precise graph language: a directly proportional relationship is a straight line through the origin; a non-linear relationship is represented by a curve.
