Induced magnetism

Definition

The process by which a magnetic material becomes a magnet while in an external magnetic field.

The end nearest the inducing pole becomes the opposite pole, so induced magnetism causes attraction. For example, a paper clip beside a magnet can become an induced magnet and may then attract another paper clip.
