Crumple zone

A crumple zone at the front of a car deforms during a collision. This allows the car to come to rest over a longer time rather than stopping as abruptly against the barrier. A seatbelt restrains an occupant and can stretch slightly; an airbag provides a cushion between the occupant and a hard surface.
