Revise: Earth's MagnetismThe field is associated with Earth's core, so the compass behaviour supports the conclusion in this course that the core must be magnetic.
Explain the observation and the inference: a freely turning compass needle aligns with a magnetic field; its consistent direction away from nearby magnets is evidence that Earth produces a magnetic field associated with its core.
A compass does not prove that Earth's core is a permanent bar magnet. Nearby magnets or electric currents can also change its direction.
