Revise: Evidence for Big BangElements in stars absorb particular wavelengths of light, leaving dark absorption lines in a spectrum. Each element produces a recognisable pattern, so astronomers can compare the positions of lines in light from a distant galaxy with the positions of the same lines measured nearby. In light from nearly all distant galaxies, the whole pattern appears at longer wavelengths, towards the red end of the spectrum.
- Revise: Red-shift
A dark line at a particular wavelength in a continuous spectrum, produced when an element absorbs that wavelength.
