Revise: Structure of the cardiovascular systemThe right ventricle then contracts and pushes blood through a semi-lunar valve into the pulmonary artery. This artery carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs. There, blood gains oxygen and releases carbon dioxide.
Arteries carry blood away from the heart; veins carry blood towards it. The pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood, while the pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood.
