Definition

A substance used to improve sporting performance. The advantages and disadvantages in this lesson concern prohibited PED use.

Performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) are substances used to improve sporting performance. Here, the issue is the use of prohibited PEDs: substances banned under the rules of sport. Evaluating their use means considering the benefits a performer hopes to gain alongside the costs and risks they face.

Describe a level playing field as the performer's perceived justification, not proof that opponents are doping or that PED use is fair.
