Revise: Lever systemsThe forearm turns around the elbow joint, raising the weight. This is a lever system: a rigid bar turns around a pivot when a force is applied.
Identify the middle component: first class = fulcrum, second class = load, third class = effort. ‘Middle’ means between the other two components, not necessarily halfway along the lever.
To justify which lever has the greatest mechanical advantage, compare effort arm ÷ resistance arm, not effort-arm length alone.
For a first-class lever, inspect the arm lengths shown rather than assuming that the lever class determines its mechanical advantage.
