Revise: EPOC and oxygen debtOxygen cannot always be supplied quickly enough to meet their demands through aerobic respiration alone, so the muscles also release energy through anaerobic respiration: breaking down glucose without using oxygen.
When explaining heavy breathing after exercise, link anaerobic respiration → lactic acid production → extra oxygen needed to remove lactic acid → repayment of oxygen debt.
