Revise: Stereotypes and misrepresentationUnder-representation concerns limited presence or prominence. A group might rarely appear, receive little speaking time or be absent from leading roles. Misrepresentation concerns misleading portrayal.

Distinguish absence or limited visibility from distortion: under-representation concerns how much a group appears; misrepresentation concerns how it is portrayed.
Distinguish under-representation from misrepresentation: limited visibility is not the same as a distorted portrayal, although both can occur together.

Under-representation means that a social group receives limited visibility or prominence in media products. It can involve absence, but also restricted roles: appearing in the background is not the same as having a central role or a voice.
