A shared cultural identity associated with factors such as heritage, ancestry, language and traditions. Ethnicity is not the same as religious faith.

Ethnicity concerns cultural background, heritage and ancestry. In television, casting contributes to ethnic representation, but meaningful analysis also considers what characters do: whether they lead, make decisions, show vulnerability or remain on the margins of the story.

For ethnicity, connect casting to character importance and actions. Distinguish an actor’s ethnic background from a fictional character’s nationality or ancestry.

For the 2025 question, address class, ethnicity, audience interpretation and contexts. An essay mainly about gender does not answer it.

Everyone has an ethnicity, including white people. If the question asks about ethnicity, keep your analysis focused on ethnicity rather than replacing it with gender.

Ethnicity concerns cultural identity and heritage. It is distinct from religion: describing Mobeen as a British Muslim identifies nationality and faith, while his South Asian descent identifies ethnic heritage. Representation can combine these aspects, but they should not be treated as interchangeable.
