The distance along the curved surface of a right cone from the edge of its base to its vertex.
Specification G17 · Paper 1, Paper 2, Paper 3
For a cone, the distance from the edge of the circular base to the apex along the curved surface. For a pyramid, the face slant height is the perpendicular height of a triangular face, running from the apex to the relevant base edge.
Revise: Surface Area and Volume of 3D SolidsIn particular, distinguish radius from diameter and perpendicular height from slant height.

The height of a triangular face, measured from the apex at right angles to that face’s base edge.
The perpendicular height is used in a volume formula; the slant height is used for the curved surface area of a cone.
Write the formula before substituting, and identify whether each labelled length is a radius, diameter, perpendicular height or slant height.
For a cone or pyramid, volume uses the perpendicular height; surface area usually requires a slant height or the perpendicular height of each triangular face.
