Revise: The Four Operations with Numbers and FractionsThe four operations are addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They act on many forms of number: integers, decimals, proper and improper fractions, and mixed numbers. The mathematical meaning of an operation does not change when the numbers are negative or written in another form, although the most convenient calculation method may change.

Write negative numbers in brackets when multiplying or dividing, for example , so that operation signs and number signs are unambiguous.
Estimate before calculating, then use the inverse operation to check. A misplaced decimal point often produces an answer ten or one hundred times too large or small.

The four operations are addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Addition combines amounts, while subtraction finds what remains or the difference between two amounts. Multiplication forms equal groups or scales a number, while division shares an amount equally or finds how many equal groups fit into it.
