The horizontal and vertical parts of a vector, written as the top and bottom entries respectively in a two-dimensional column vector.

In column notation, work component by component: combine the top entries together and the bottom entries together.
Treat subtraction as adding the negative vector. This helps prevent sign errors, especially when the vector being subtracted contains negative components.
