Definition

Irish Jacobite soldiers who left Ireland after the Treaty of Limerick in 1691 to serve abroad, particularly in France.

Around 12,000 soldiers left between October and December 1691; these emigrants became known as the Wild Geese. Their departure removed experienced soldiers from Ireland while strengthening armies on the Continent.
