The Republic developed a welfare state, in which government accepted responsibility for helping people facing hardship. Some foundations predated the recovery: the 1920 Reich Pension Law supported war widows and former soldiers. These payments addressed the lasting human consequences of the First World War.

Its most important healthcare development was the establishment of the National Health Service in 1948. The NHS provided healthcare funded through taxation and free at the point of use, making access less dependent on a person's ability to pay directly for treatment.
