Urine charts

Definition

Charts that medieval physicians used to compare a patient's urine, especially its colour, with standard samples in order to diagnose an imbalance of the four humours.

Physicians used humoral theory to interpret symptoms and recommend changes to diet, lifestyle or medicines. They examined urine, using its colour and other characteristics alongside urine charts to identify supposed imbalances. They also consulted star charts.
