Diagnosis

Hippocrates encouraged doctors to observe a patient’s symptoms before making a diagnosis. Diagnosis means identifying an illness. Observation meant paying attention to what was happening to the patient rather than choosing a treatment without considering their condition.

Thomas Sydenham improved diagnosis, the identification of an illness. He argued that diseases could be grouped by their characteristic symptoms, just as plants and animals could be classified by shared characteristics.
