Trade embargo

Definition

A government restriction or ban on trade with another country, usually intended to put political or economic pressure on it.

The USA reduced its purchases of Cuban sugar in July 1960 and introduced a trade embargo in October. Diplomatic relations were broken off in January 1961. As access to American trade and support declined, Cuba increasingly looked to the USSR for trade and protection.
