Revise: Slavery in North AmericaRice plantations developed a task system, under which enslaved workers received individual daily assignments. After completing them, they could have some time to cultivate food for themselves. This provided limited independence, but it did not make them free, and it also reduced planters' responsibility for providing their basic care.
