Fugitive

Some enslaved people attempted to escape and became fugitives. Escape challenged owners' control, but colonial authorities helped capture and return those who fled. Virginia's 1705 act shows how government, courts and local officials supported slaveholders rather than leaving recapture entirely to individual owners.
