Revise: Liberal reformsThe budget increased income tax and duties on tobacco and spirits. It included taxes on cars, petrol and land, and introduced a supertax on annual incomes above £5,000. The government was therefore asking wealthy taxpayers to make a greater contribution, although taxation did not fall only on the wealthy: duties on goods could also affect ordinary consumers.
