Revise: Aftermath of WarGrenville’s Sugar Act sought to raise revenue from colonial trade. It reduced the duty on molasses from six pence to three pence per gallon, but strengthened enforcement against smuggling. A lower rate did not necessarily mean a lighter burden: merchants who had previously evaded the duty now faced a greater likelihood of having to pay it.
