Succession crisis

Four claimants emerged: Harold Godwinson, William of Normandy, Harald Hardrada and Edgar Atheling. Their competing claims turned Edward’s death into a succession crisis: a dispute over who should become the next ruler.

The powerful Godwin family had helped sustain Edward’s rule, but its divisions and its difficult relationship with Normandy now helped shape the succession crisis.
