Revise: Establishing ControlNorthumbria was a large earldom with a defiant Anglo-Danish community. Its submission therefore mattered to William’s attempts to extend his authority beyond the area his army had already defeated.

Acceptance of another ruler’s authority. Submission to Persia meant recognising the Persian king’s superiority rather than dealing with him as an equal.
By the end of the sixth century BC, Persia’s growing power had persuaded many Greek city-states to offer submission. Athens did so too. Submission meant accepting Persian authority: this was an attempt to accommodate the empire, not a declaration of resistance to it.

Revise: Svein ForkbeardSvein returned in 1013, accompanied by his son Cnut. He first secured the submission of powerful nobles in northern England, then moved south, gaining further support. Submission meant accepting him as ruler; he did not need to defeat every region in battle.
