Revise: Trade, Towns and VillagesThe Statute of Merchants in 1285 extended and strengthened these arrangements. Its importance was economic: stronger debt recovery gave merchants greater confidence that money owed to them would be paid. This encouraged trade and helped keep money circulating rather than leaving traders unable to finance their next purchases.
