A tax on goods entering or leaving a country; Edward I collected customs duty on exported wool.
Revise: Trade, Towns and VillagesIn 1275, Parliament approved customs duties on exports of wool, woolfells — sheepskins with the wool still attached — and leather. The duty on wool was 6 shillings and 8 pence per sack, equivalent to half a mark. Merchants paid the duty when exporting their goods.
