Revise: Anglo-German RivalryFor much of the nineteenth century, Britain followed Splendid Isolation: it avoided permanent European alliances rather than binding itself to another power’s military commitments. This did not mean Britain ignored other countries. It meant British governments believed they could protect their interests without permanent allies, leaving them free to concentrate on their empire.
