Speculation

Some investors bought shares mainly to sell them later at a higher price. This was speculation. Rising prices could bring profits to shareholders, encouraging further investment and reinforcing confidence in the economy.

Speculation means buying an asset in the hope of selling it later at a higher price. It could become self-reinforcing: rising prices attracted buyers hoping to sell at an even higher price. Such expectations were different from the company actually earning sufficient profits to justify those prices.
