Semi-opera

Setting the play to music helped it get around the ban on spoken theatre. His later musical adaptations of Shakespeare helped prepare the way for Henry Purcell’s semi-operas, combining spoken drama with singing and instrumental music. Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas dates from 1689.
