Revise: Sound and MusicBrass bands also expanded during industrialisation. Moving from the countryside into industrial towns could leave workers facing unfamiliar surroundings and poor conditions. Some employers funded workplace bands as an alternative to drinking, hoping to reduce its effects on efficiency at work.
Distinguish participation from listening: joining a brass band meant making music, whereas listening to a radio meant receiving a broadcast.
