Revise: The Nature of CrusadingCrusaders were exempt from the Saladin tithe, the tax raised to finance the expedition. They received temporary relief from debt repayments while away, and hoped to gain wealth or land in the Holy Land. Professional soldiers had the more direct incentive of being paid for their service.
