Revise: Cruelty in Sport and EntertainmentGloves replaced bare-knuckle striking. However, regulation did not make boxing harmless: striking an opponent remained central to the contest. The change was towards controlled competition, not the complete removal of violence.
Do not describe all eighteenth-century boxing as completely without rules: Broughton published rules in 1743, but these offered much less control than later boxing regulations.
