Ransom of Montezuma

After about two weeks as Montezuma’s guests, Cortés seized him during an audience. His immediate justification was news that Aztec forces had killed Spanish soldiers near Veracruz. This seizure and captivity is known as the ransom of Montezuma: Cortés held the ruler as a hostage to provide security against Aztec attack.
