Revise: Siege of TenochtitlanCortés’s thirteen brigantines were launched on 28 April 1521, before the main siege developed. These small warships allowed his forces to challenge Aztec canoes, patrol the lake and support attacks along the causeways. Controlling the water mattered because land attacks alone could not stop supplies arriving by canoe.
