Revise: Social Change: Women and ProhibitionThe Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) and the Anti-Saloon League campaigned for prohibition, blaming alcohol for poverty, crime and broken marriages. Many women supported the campaign because they associated drinking with harm to family life.
Separate prohibition’s aims from its results, and explain the links between continuing demand, illegal supply, criminal profits and corruption.
Keep the legislation distinct: the Eighteenth Amendment established prohibition, the Volstead Act provided its enforcement mechanism, and the Twenty-first Amendment repealed it.
