Revise: Divided SocietyThe Ku Klux Klan, originally formed after the American Civil War, promoted white Protestant supremacy. In the 1920s it targeted African Americans, but also Catholics, Jews, new immigrants and communists. Its hostility brought racial, religious and political prejudice together.

At Anniston, Alabama, on 14 May 1961, a mob including Ku Klux Klan members attacked a Freedom Riders’ bus, breaking windows and slashing tyres. Outside the town, an attacker set the bus on fire while riders were still inside. Members of the mob tried to prevent their escape.
