Revise: Civil unrest in Northern IrelandOn 29 November 1974, the Labour government passed the Prevention of Terrorism Act. It banned the IRA in Britain, allowed suspects to be detained without charge for up to seven days with the necessary authorisation, and enabled exclusion orders preventing suspected participants in terrorism from entering Britain. These powers demonstrate how the conflict affected policing and civil liberties across Britain, not just security in Northern Ireland.
