Revise: The State and the People: World Wars and the Post-War EraConservative governments after 1951 retained much of the welfare and economic settlement, although they also supported private enterprise. This broad overlap is called the post-war consensus. It helps explain why a substantial state role survived changes of government, but the parties continued to disagree about spending, ownership and economic policy.
