Revise: Extension of the FranchiseIn 1829, Thomas Attwood formed the Birmingham Political Union, bringing together middle-class and working-class supporters of reform. Its petition, signed by about 8,000 people, demanded votes for men who paid taxes. Although it was rejected, the organisation showed how campaigners could combine their support and put pressure on Parliament.
