Patriot

During the War of Independence, colonists were divided between Patriots, who supported breaking away from Britain, and Loyalists, who opposed separation. Washington’s forces initially struggled with shortages, limited training and soldiers leaving service.

Patriots needed to persuade people to support separation, maintain an army capable of resisting Britain, obtain foreign assistance and finally secure a peace agreement recognising their independence.
