Pallium

Anselm wanted to obtain the pallium, the sign of an archbishop’s authority granted by the pope. Rufus initially prevented him from travelling to Rome because he feared recognition of papal authority would reduce royal control. An agreement with the pope allowed the immediate dispute over the pallium to be settled, but it did not resolve the wider conflict.
