Revise: The ChurchThe Investiture Controversy was a wider European argument about whether secular rulers should confer religious office on bishops. Investiture involved presenting the emblems of office. Kings also expected bishops to perform homage because they held royal land.
Distinguish investiture, which conferred religious office, from homage, which acknowledged obligations to the king as a landholder.
Use the 1107 settlement as the later outcome of the Investiture Controversy, not as an event within William II’s reign.
