New thinking

Gorbachev’s new thinking changed this relationship. He abandoned the Brezhnev Doctrine, under which the Soviet Union claimed the right to intervene to protect communist rule. Eastern European governments could no longer assume that Soviet troops would rescue them from opposition at home.
