Naturalism

Jahangir wrote on the painting himself, identifying Mansur as its artist and recording how and when the zebra had arrived. This connects the emperor’s curiosity directly to an artistic commission. Such work encouraged naturalism: close attention to the actual appearance of a particular animal rather than merely a general idea of what that animal looked like.
