National Health Service (NHS)

After Labour’s election victory in 1945, Health Minister Aneurin Bevan helped establish the NHS, launched on 5 July 1948. It was funded through taxation and based on medical need rather than ability to pay, with care free at the point of delivery. Government was now accepting much wider responsibility for access to treatment.
