Nahuatl

Communication was essential: without it, the Spanish could not reliably explain their demands, understand warnings or negotiate with local leaders. However, knowledge of Maya alone would not allow them to communicate with people speaking Nahuatl, the language of the Mexica at the centre of the Aztec Empire.
